To Our California Friends,

After a 4-day nice drive, we arrived at our new home on Saturday, July 3^rd. Don and Wendy (my kids) and Wendy’s mom had almost all the rooms painted by the time we got here. Because the movers did not arrive until the following Wednesday, we did a little more painting and also shopped for our fridge, washer, and dryer.

The moving company, Merit Moving Systems, was really great. Nothing broken that we know of, at least yet. We spent days and days and days, unpacking boxes and trying to figure out where to put things. We still have about a dozen boxes left to unpack besides all the boxes with books.

The weather has been hot and humid. But the trade-off is that we can see lots of green, beautiful trees from every one of our windows, which both Dan and I absolutely love. And everywhere we go, it is such a pretty drive—whether it is to the grocery store or on the freeway. Our gas mileage is better because there never seems to be any congestion. We have almost all the same type of stores for shopping and restaurants as in California, with the exception of grocery stores and gas stations. Some of the brand names in grocery stores are different; for instance no Farmer John brand here.

AJ and Kaylin are happy we are here. Although we live 10 miles from them, we do not see them everyday. They are in year-round school so just finished their summer break. AJ, especially, looks forward to times when we can play board games with him. So far we have just been trying to get our home in order.

We had to buy a bed for our guest room since my son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Melissa, already came to see us. They were our first guests and we loved seeing them and having them here for the last two days of their vacation to the east coast—a vacation they had planned even before we decided to retire. Please know that if you are ever close to North Carolina, we would love to see you. There really is a lot to see in the eastern United States so plan your vacations for this direction!

We had hoped to have time to stop and see more of you before we left, but while Dan was doing a lot of packing, I was still working our last escrows. Several people had requested from us a list of our contractors, painters, plumbers, etc., so I did take time to put together a 10-page list and gave a copy to Denny and Denise. If you would like a copy, please do not hesitate to call Denny or Denise. We needed a plumber to install our new toilets and sure could have used Frank Szarka from our list.
